Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs until well combined.
  4. Add the milk, vanilla and salt and stir until fully combined.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk the 3 cups of flour with the baking powder. Add the flour gradually to the wet mixture. The dough should be firm enough to form balls. For shapes such as loops, knots or pretzels, add up to 1 more cup (125g) of flour until the dough is manageable.
  6. Roll about 1 tablespoon of dough into a ball or shape it. Place on the prepared sheet, at least 5 cm (2 in) apart.
  7. Bake in the centre of the oven at 175°C (350°F) for 8 minutes.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the sheet for at least 5 minutes, then move them to a rack to cool completely.
  9. Whisk the powdered sugar with the milk until a very thin glaze forms. Brush it over the completely cooled cookies, and sprinkle with nonpareils or sprinkles right away if using.
  10. Let the glaze set before eating.
