Ingredients
- Pie crust
- Apple3 lb
- Sugar⅔ cups + 1 tbsp
- Cinnamon1 tsp
- Salt0.13 tsp
- Butter3 tbsp
- Cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Roll out half the crust and fit it into a 9-inch deep pie dish, trimming the edges to leave half an inch overhang. Roll the other half into a 10-inch circle between waxed paper. Refrigerate the dish and the top crust.
- Peel the apples and cut them into 1/4-inch slices.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat, then add the apples, sugar and spices. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes until the apples soften.
- Remove the apples to a bowl. Bring the liquid in the pan to a boil and boil a couple of minutes until thickened, then pour it over the apples. Let cool to room temperature.
- Spread the cooled apples and sauce in the bottom crust, lay the top crust over, crimp the edges together and cut slashes in the top.
- Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar if desired.
- Bake at 350°F for 30-40 minutes until golden.
- Cool completely, 2-3 hours.
