Basic Cabbage Rolls (Japanese Home Cooking Recipe) | OCHIKERON | Create Eat Happy :)
Ingredients
- Ground beef340 g
- Onion · minced1
- Cabbage1
- Stock cube1
- Bay leaf2
- Vegetable oil1 tbsp
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Nutmeg
- Parsley · flakes
- Ketchup
Instructions
- Peel up to 16 good cabbage leaves. Microwave them on a dish covered loosely with plastic wrap on medium (600W) for 5 minutes, or boil until soft and drain. Shave down thick cores so the leaves are flat.
- Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the minced onion until tender. Add half the ground meat and cook until no pink remains. Season with salt and pepper, then move to a large bowl to cool.
- When the meat is cool enough to handle, add the rest of the meat, 1/2 tsp salt, pepper and nutmeg, and knead well. Divide into 8 portions.
- Place a portion on a cabbage leaf and roll tightly. If leaves are small, overlap 2 or 3 of them before wrapping.
- Pack the rolls tightly in a pot, filling gaps with cabbage scraps so they stay closed while cooking. Break the consommé cube into quarters and scatter over, add the bay leaves and 1 cup (240 ml) of water, cover, and cook on medium-low for 30 minutes.
- Arrange the rolls on serving dishes. Season the broth with salt and pepper and pour over. If you like, thicken the broth with a slurry of 1 tbsp starch diluted in 2 tbsp water. Sprinkle with parsley flakes.
