Best chocolate cake recipe for beginners | How to make chocolate cake
Ingredients
- Flour¾ cups + 2 tbsp
- Cocoa powder¼ cups + 2 tbsp + 4 tbsp
- Salt½ tsp
- Baking powder¾ tsp
- Baking soda¾ tsp
- Sugar2 ¾ cups
- Egg1
- Milk9 ½ tbsp
- Oil¼ cups
- Vanilla1–2 tsp + 1 tsp
- Butter½ cups
Instructions
- Grease and line two 6-inch cake pans (or one 7 or 8-inch pan). Preheat the oven to 350°F / 175°C for at least 15 minutes.
- Sift the flour, cocoa, salt, baking powder and baking soda into a mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar until well combined.
- Make a well in the centre. Add the egg, oil, vanilla and milk, and whisk the wet ingredients together. Mix wet and dry until just combined and no lumps remain.
- Whisk in the boiling hot water until fully absorbed. The batter will be runny. Pour it into the pans and tap them gently on the counter twice.
- Bake for 28 to 30 minutes, or until a tester inserted comes out clean. Adjust timing to your oven.
- Cool in the pans on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack and cool completely before frosting.
- For the frosting, beat the soft but cold butter for 2 minutes until light and creamy. Add the remaining frosting ingredients except the milk and beat until smooth, light and creamy.
- If the frosting is too thick, add milk and beat. If it turns runny, add more powdered sugar.
- Chill briefly, then spread over the cooled cake. Refrigerate and use within a week.
