Crispy Halloumi Fries (cheese fries)

Crispy Halloumi Fries (cheese fries)

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Cut the halloumi into strips about ½ inch (1.5 cm) thick, like thick-cut fries.
  2. In one bowl, mix the flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder and a good pinch of salt. In a second bowl, whisk the eggs. Put the panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  3. Coat each strip in order: flour (shake off the excess), then egg, then panko. Press the panko on so it sticks, and set the coated strip on a plate. Use one hand for the wet egg and the other for the dry coatings to keep the mess down.
  4. Air fryer: preheat to 400°F / 200°C. Spray the basket base with olive oil and arrange the fries in one layer without touching, working in batches if needed. Spray generously with oil, cook for 6 minutes until lightly golden. Flip, spray the other side, and cook 2–3 more minutes until golden (8–10 minutes total, depending on your air fryer).
  5. Pan frying: heat about ¼ cup oil in a small deep saucepan over medium-high heat, working in batches. Test the oil by sprinkling in a little flour; it is ready when it sizzles. Add the fries one at a time without crowding. Fry 2–3 minutes until golden, flip and fry the second side for 1 minute or until golden. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Oven baking: preheat to 400°F / 200°C. Line a baking tray with parchment and lay the fries in a single layer without touching. Spray generously with olive oil, bake 10 minutes, flip, spray the other side, and bake a further 5 minutes until golden brown.
