Crispy Sesame Tofu (Easy & Vegan)
Ingredients
- Extra firm tofu1
- Salt½ tsp
- Black pepper
- Oil
- Cornstarch¼ cups
- Milk⅓ cups
- Onion powder½ tsp
- Garlic powder½ tsp
- Nutritional yeast2 tbsp
- Breadcrumb¾ cups
- Sesame seed¼ cups
- Sauce of choice for dipping
Instructions
- Press the tofu using your usual method so it crisps faster.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F. Line the baking sheet with parchment or a silicone mat if you like.
- Cut the tofu into pieces about 1/2 inch thick, such as small triangles or cubes, and season generously with salt and pepper.
- In one dish, whisk together the flour or cornstarch, onion powder, garlic powder, nutritional yeast, plant milk, salt and pepper to a batter slightly thinner than pancake batter, adding water or flour to adjust.
- In another dish, mix the panko and sesame seeds.
- Dip each piece of tofu in the batter, let the excess drip off, then press into the panko mixture to coat well.
- Arrange the tofu on the lined sheet, optionally spray lightly with oil. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, until the breading is crispy and deep golden brown.
- Air fryer option: arrange the tofu in one layer if possible, air fry at 390°F for 12 to 15 minutes, shaking or turning gently halfway through.
- Serve right away with your favourite dipping sauce, optionally topped with sliced scallions.
