Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and line two large baking sheets with parchment or silicone mats.
  2. Soften the cream cheese until very soft, then beat until smooth and lump-free.
  3. Add the vanilla, salt, cream and powdered sugar and mix for a minute or two until smooth.
  4. Spoon the filling into a piping bag or zip-lock bag and snip off a small tip.
  5. Lightly flour the work surface and roll out the puff pastry sheets until smooth.
  6. Cut as many large hearts as possible with the large cutter, then cut a smaller heart from the centre of half of them to make frames.
  7. Place the large hearts on the lined sheet and brush the edges with beaten egg.
  8. Set the frames on the edges, pipe cream cheese filling into the centre, spread a little preserve on top, and brush the pastry edges with egg wash.
  9. Bake at 350°F (177°C) for 18 to 20 minutes, until rich golden brown on top.
  10. Reshape any puffed-out pastries with a knife or spatula as soon as they come out, then cool on the sheet for 10 minutes.
