Easy Potatoes au Gratin Recipe
Ingredients
- Potato4
- Onion1
- Salt¾ tsp
- Pepper½ tsp
- Butter¼ cups
- Flour3 tbsp
- Milk2 cups
- Gruyère cheese · shredded½ cups
- Cheddar cheese · shredded1 cup
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Peel the potatoes and slice them about ⅛ inch thick. Peel, halve and thinly slice the onion. Layer the potato and onion slices in a 2 to 3 quart casserole dish, lightly seasoning each layer with salt and pepper.
- In a medium pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 2 minutes, whisking constantly. Slowly whisk in the warm milk. Keep whisking for 2 to 3 minutes until it starts to bubble and thickens slightly.
- Off the heat, stir in the cheeses, salt and pepper until melted. Pour the sauce over the potatoes and cover tightly with foil.
- Bake for 1 hour, or until a fork goes in with slight resistance. If still too firm, keep baking and check every 10 to 15 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake a further 20 to 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and a fork slides easily into the centre.
- Let the gratin cool for 10 to 15 minutes so the sauce thickens before serving.
