Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C); if you did not preheat, use 360°F. Preheat for at least 30 minutes for the best golden, crisp finish.
  2. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt for the dough. Cut in the shortening and butter until crumbly. Mix the egg with 2 tablespoons water, and add it with 1/2 cup plus 4 tablespoons cold water to form the dough.
  3. Make the filling: peel and dice the apples, then cook them with the sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon, allspice, 1 tablespoon butter, the salt pinches and nutmeg until thickened.
  4. Roll out the dough, cut circles, add filling to each, fold and seal the edges.
  5. Brush with butter and bake, setting a timer for 23 minutes and checking at that point, until golden. Total bake time is 25 to 30 minutes.
  6. Cool before serving.
