Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta in salted water until just al dente, then drain. Do not overcook, as it will keep cooking in the oven.
  2. In a deep pan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef and onion, breaking up the beef, for 5 to 7 minutes until the beef is fully cooked and the onion is soft. Add the garlic, salt and pepper and sauté for 1 more minute. Add the 5 cups marinara, bring to a simmer, cook for 5 minutes, then turn off the heat.
  3. Spread a ladle of meat sauce over the bottom of a 9x13 inch casserole dish.
  4. Add the chopped basil and spoon the ricotta into the remaining sauce. Add the pasta and stir just until coated, keeping the ricotta texture.
  5. Put half the pasta in the casserole dish. Top with half the shredded mozzarella and half the grated parmesan. Add the rest of the pasta and top with the remaining mozzarella and parmesan.
  6. Clear the edges of the dish so the cheese does not burn onto it. Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes. Broil for 1 to 2 minutes to brown the cheese.
  7. Let cool for 5 minutes, garnish with basil if you like, and serve.
