Garlic Parmesan Challah Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- Flour4 cups
- Yeast1 tbsp
- Vegetable oil¼ cups
- Egg2
- Sugar¼ cups
- Salt1 tsp
- Parmesan cheese · grated⅓ cups
- Garlic powder1 ½–2 tsp
- Parsley · chopped¼ cups
- Thyme2 tsp
- Oregano · dried1 tsp
Instructions
- Put the flour, yeast, sugar, salt and garlic powder in a bowl (or stand mixer bowl) and mix. Make a well in the middle and add the egg, oil and water.
- Knead on low speed. If the dough is too dry, add 1-2 tablespoons water; if too sticky, add 1-2 tablespoons flour. Knead for 4-5 minutes.
- Add the parsley, thyme, oregano and parmesan and knead for 2-3 more minutes until the dough is soft and smooth.
- Put the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, until doubled in size.
- Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each into a rope about 1 inch thick. If a rope keeps shrinking, rest it for 5 minutes, then roll again.
- Braid the four ropes into a challah. Place it on a parchment-lined baking tray, cover and let rise for 45-60 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 360°F (180°C).
- Brush the loaf gently with beaten egg mixed with oil. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if you like.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown at the edges. Let cool for at least 30 minutes.
