Gingerbread House Recipe | How to make a Gingerbread House
Ingredients
- Butter1 stick
- Syrup¾ cups
- Ginger · ground4 tsp
- Cinnamon · ground4 tsp
- Brown sugar1 ¼ cups
- Flour6 ½ cups
- Milk1 ¼ cups
- Egg2
- Sugar4 cups
- Cinnamon stick
- Candy / Lollies
Instructions
- Put the butter, syrup, ground ginger, ground cinnamon and brown sugar in a small saucepan.
- Melt them together over medium heat, stirring now and then. Remove from the heat once the butter has fully melted.
- Add the flour, the butter mixture and the milk to a large bowl and fold together with a wooden spoon or stand mixer. The dough will be very stiff but sticky.
- Cover the bowl and chill the dough in the fridge for 3-4 hours or overnight until firm.
- Take the dough out. Sandwich about one cup of it between two sheets of non-stick paper and roll to 1-1.5 cm (1/2-1/4 inch) thick.
- Cut out the pieces from the printed template with scissors, then trim them to shape with a knife. Repeat until all pieces are cut.
- Chill the pieces in the fridge for 30 minutes so they keep their shape in the oven.
- Bake at 180°C / 350°F for 15-20 minutes, until the edges just start to brown. Bake in batches if needed.
- While the pieces bake and cool, beat the egg whites and powdered sugar on medium speed for 5-8 minutes until thick and bright white. Cover the bowl so it does not dry out.
- Fill a piping bag fitted with a small round nozzle with the royal icing and decorate the flat pieces.
- Leave the decorated pieces for about 6 hours until fully hardened.
- Pipe icing along the edges of the four walls, join them and support with cups or tins until the icing dries for about 4 hours.
- Add the roof, then the chimney, piping icing on each side and joining them carefully.
- Pipe remaining icing on the base as snow, add cinnamon sticks as logs, and dust with powdered sugar.
