Ham Roll Recipe - Japanese Cooking 101
Ingredients
- Bread
- Ham8 slices
- Egg
- Japanese mayonnaise
- Onion¼
- Parsley · dried flakes
Instructions
- Make the Japanese basic bread up to the end of step 4, let the first rise finish, then knock back the dough.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces, shape each into a small ball, and cover them to rest for 15 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C).
- Roll a ball into an oval about 4 x 5 inches (10 x 12.5 cm). Lay a slice of ham on it and roll tightly like a jelly roll, pinching all edges so the ham is enclosed. Pinch the two long ends together and press the dough down to flatten it somewhat.
- Make a vertical cut down the middle of the looped end, leaving 1 inch (about 2.5 cm) at the pinched end uncut. Open the dough out and place it swirl side up on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving 2 inches (5 cm) between rolls.
- Repeat with the remaining dough, let the rolls rise for 45 minutes or until doubled.
- Brush the rolls with egg wash, squeeze mayonnaise on top, add a few slices of onion and sprinkle with aonori.
- Bake for about 12 minutes or until browned.
