Homemade Cough Drops
Ingredients
- Honey1 cup
- Lemon2 tbsp
- Ginger · grated1 tbsp
- Turmeric · ground½ tsp
- Black pepper
- Cornstarch2 tbsp
Instructions
- Set a silicone candy mold on a large baking sheet. If you have no molds, spread cornstarch in a shallow baking sheet instead.
- In a small heavy saucepan, stir together the honey, lemon juice, ginger, turmeric and black pepper. Clip on a candy thermometer and cook over medium-low heat, stirring now and then, until it reaches 300°F (hard-crack stage), about 15 minutes. Watch closely so it does not scorch.
- Take the pan off the heat right away. Quickly spoon the hot mixture into the molds. Without molds, press the back of a tablespoon into the cornstarch to make small wells, then spoon the mixture into each one. Let the drops set completely before brushing off excess cornstarch.
- Let the drops cool at room temperature until hard, about 30 minutes.
- Dust the hardened drops with powdered sugar or cornstarch to prevent sticking. Store them individually wrapped in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 months.
