homemade flour tortillas
Ingredients
- Flour2 cups
- Whole wheat flour½ cups
- Hemp heart1–2 tbsp
- Baking powder1 tsp
- Salt1 tsp
- Avocado oil¼ cups
Instructions
- Whisk the flour, whole wheat flour, hemp hearts if using, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
- Add the avocado oil and 180 g (¾ cup) hot water. Stir with a fork until shaggy, adding more water 1 tablespoon at a time only if needed to bring the dough together.
- Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 1 minute until a ball forms. The dough should be neither very dry nor sticky.
- Divide into 8 equal balls, cover with a slightly damp towel and rest for 20 minutes.
- After resting, heat a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
- Roll one ball at a time into a thin 8-inch circle. Cook in the hot skillet for about 30 seconds, until bubbles appear and the underside is lightly golden in places. Flip and cook the other side for 20 to 30 seconds. If the pan starts smoking, lower the heat.
- Move the cooked tortillas to a clean warm towel to keep them soft. To reheat stored tortillas, warm them in a skillet or microwave for 10 to 15 seconds.
