Homemade Milk Bread (Pain Au Lait)
Ingredients
- Flour3 cups
- Yeast1 tsp
- Evaporated milk¼ cups
- Sugar4 tbsp
- Salt½ tsp
- Butter3 tbsp
- Egg1
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast and sugar. Add the evaporated milk and melted butter and whisk. Add the flour and salt and mix into a sticky dough.
- Flour a board well and turn the dough onto it. Knead gently, adding flour as needed, but not so much that the bread turns hard.
- Divide the dough into four equal pieces. Roll one piece out to about 10 inches wide. Roll it up from one end to the other, tuck the edges under to form a loaf, then cut four diagonal slits across the top with a knife. Set on a greased or parchment-lined tray. Repeat with the other pieces.
- Let the loaves rise in a warm place for one hour, until about doubled in size.
- Beat the egg and brush the loaves generously with it.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 15 minutes, until golden brown.
