Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. In a bowl, cream the butter or margarine with the icing sugar, using a wooden spoon or an electric mixer.
  3. Mix in the vegetable oil and vanilla essence until combined.
  4. Add the all-purpose or cake flour and the corn flour and mix until a clumpy dough forms.
  5. Knead by hand into a smooth biscuit dough.
  6. Set aside ¼ of the dough, add 1–2 drops of red food colouring gel to the smaller portion, and mix with a spoon, then by hand, until evenly coloured.
  7. Wrap the two doughs separately (cling film or separate zip-lock bags) and chill for 20 minutes to help the biscuits keep their shape.
  8. On a floured surface, roll out the plain dough, cut out teddy shapes with a teddy cutter and place them on a baking tray.
  9. Roll out the red dough and cut small heart shapes that will fit in the middle of the teddies.
  10. Place a heart at the centre of each teddy and press lightly with a finger.
  11. Fold the teddy's arms over the heart; if they break, gently reshape them with your fingers.
  12. Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven.
  13. Let the biscuits cool completely on the tray before moving them, as they are fragile until firm.
  14. Store in an airtight container for up to one month.
