How to Make a Heart Shaped Cake
Ingredients
- Butter4 ½ cups
- Sugar6 ½ cups
- Vanilla4 tsp
- Egg6
- Buttermilk1 ½ cups
- Flour3 cups
- Baking soda3 tsp
- Baking powder3 tsp
- Salt½ tsp
- Heavy cream2 tbsp
- Strawberry · dried1.2 oz + 1 cup
- Red food color
- Decorative sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line an 8x8-inch square pan and an 8-inch round pan with parchment, and grease the sides with non-stick spray.
- Melt the butter in the microwave in a large bowl. Add the buttermilk, eggs, vanilla and sugar, and beat for a few minutes until smooth.
- In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Sift them into the batter and beat for about a minute, until smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly between the two pans using a ladle, keeping the level the same in both.
- Bake at 350°F for 28 to 32 minutes for the round pan and about 34 minutes for the square pan, until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack.
- Trim the caramelised edges from the cooled layers with a serrated knife and level the tops. Split each layer in half, and split the round layer down the middle.
- On a cake board or foil-wrapped board, arrange one square layer in a corner and place the two round halves on either side to form a heart.
- Spread a thin layer of buttercream over the cake. Pipe a barrier of buttercream around the edge with a star tip, then fill the centre with strawberry preserves spread to the edges.
- Add the second layers and press them gently in place.
- Apply a thin crumb coat of buttercream over the top and sides and smooth it. Chill for about 20 minutes.
- Apply a final coat of buttercream around the edges only. Pipe dollops, stars and swirls on top with the coloured and white frosting, then decorate with sprinkles. Chill until serving.
