How to Make Apple Butter
Ingredients
- Apple3 lb
- Sugar1 cup
- Apple cider vinegar¾ cups
- Apple juice½ cups
- Cinnamon · ground2 tsp
- Nutmeg · ground1 tsp
- Allspice½ tsp
- Clove · ground¼ tsp
Instructions
- Wash the apples, cut out the cores and chop the apples into small pieces. Peeling is optional.
- Put the apples in a large cast-iron pan and add the sugar, vinegar, water (or apple juice), cinnamon, nutmeg, all-spice and ground cloves. Toss until the apples are well coated.
- Cover and heat over medium until simmering. Reduce to low and cook for 18 to 20 minutes, until the apples are very soft.
- Remove from the heat and blend until very smooth, for a few extra minutes if the peel is included.
- Return the purée to the pan and cook over low heat for about 40 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until thick and reduced. If it bubbles too much, lower the heat more and cover with a splatter screen.
- Sterilise two to three small jars with boiling water and let them air dry. Fill the jars with the apple butter, seal, and refrigerate for up to 1 month. The recipe makes a little over 2 cups.
