How to Make Baklava from Scratch
Ingredients
- Sugar1 ½ cups + 1 tbsp
- Lemon1 tsp
- Walnut14 oz
- Cinnamon1 tsp
- Butter1 cup
- Filo pastry16 oz
- Baklava and filling
Instructions
- Make the syrup: simmer the sugar and water over medium-high heat, then lower to medium and simmer 15 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat, stir in the lemon juice and let cool completely.
- Pulse the walnuts, sugar and cinnamon in a food processor until finely chopped.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush a 9x13 inch pan with melted butter.
- Layer 10 phyllo sheets in the pan, brushing each with butter (fold larger sheets in half to fit). Spread half the walnut mixture on top.
- Add 10 more buttered phyllo sheets, then spread the rest of the walnut mixture on top.
- Layer the remaining phyllo, brushing every sheet with butter, including the top one.
- Cut into diamonds: strips 1 to 1½ inches wide, cut diagonally across them (or cut squares). Pour the remaining butter over the top.
- Bake 50 to 60 minutes until golden brown.
- Pour the completely cooled syrup evenly over the hot baklava right away.
- Let it rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour before serving.
