How To Make Gefilte Fish - Passover Recipe | Hilah Cooking
Ingredients
- Fish stock1
- Garlic · crushed1 clove
- Celery · sliced1
- Lemon½
- Salt1 tsp
- Black pepper · ground½ tsp
- Salmon¾ lb
- White fish¾ lb
- Vegetable oil1 tbsp
- Onion · diced1
- Egg2
- Matzo meal½ cups
- Parsley · chopped½ cups
- Horseradish sauce
- Sour cream½ cups
- Horseradish⅓ cups
- Dill · chopped3 tbsp
Instructions
- For the stock, pour 2 cups of water into a large pot. Add the garlic, celery, salt and pepper, plus the fish skin if you are skinning the fish yourself. Squeeze in the lemon juice, then add the rind. Bring to a boil, then simmer while you prepare the fish balls.
- In a small pan over medium heat, sauté the onion until soft, about 5 minutes. Let it cool.
- Chop the fish finely and put it in a bowl. Add the cooled onion, eggs, matzo meal, parsley, salt and pepper, and mix. If the mixture is too soft, add more matzo meal; if too hard, add a little stock.
- Shape 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture into smooth balls. You should get 12 balls.
- Add the balls to the simmering stock in a single layer and simmer until cooked through, about 10 minutes.
- Lift out the fish balls with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- For the horseradish sauce, combine all its ingredients.
- Serve the gefilte fish warm or cold on lettuce, with the horseradish sauce.
