Ingredients
- Bread3 slices
- Ground beef1 lb
- Garlic 路 minced4 cloves
- Onion 路 chopped1
- Egg1
- Cumin1 tsp
- Salt2 tsp
- Black pepper1 tsp
- Flour3 tbsp
- Olive oil4 tbsp
- Diced tomatoes 路 15 oz1 can
- Tomato paste2 tbsp
- Cinnamon录 tsp
Instructions
- Soak the bread in the water for a few minutes, then squeeze out any excess water. Mix in the ground beef, onion, egg, garlic, cumin, 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp pepper until well combined.
- Wet your hands and shape the mixture into football-shaped meatballs, making 8 to 12. Roll them in the flour and set aside.
- Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Sear the meatballs for about 5 minutes until golden on all sides. They do not need to be cooked through.
- In the same pan, heat 2 tbsp olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper, 1/4 tsp cinnamon and 2 cups water. Bring to a simmer, cover and cook for 20-30 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Add the seared meatballs to the sauce and cook on medium-low for about 30 minutes.
- To bake instead, put the meatballs in an oven-safe dish, pour the sauce over them and bake at 400掳F (200掳C) for 30 minutes. Check after 20 minutes; if the sauce has thickened or dried too much, add 1/2 cup water.
- Serve with white rice.
