HOW TO MAKE MEAT PIE
Ingredients
- Flour500 g
- Butter250 g
- Salt9 g + 1 tsp
- Ground beef · minced500 g
- Oil1 tbsp
- Onion½
- Carrot1
- Potato2
- Stock cube1
- Garlic powder1 tsp
- Cayenne pepper½ tsp
- Cornstarch2 tbsp
- Egg1
Instructions
- Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Rub in the cold cubed butter until the mixture looks like coarse breadcrumbs.
- Add the water and mix gently with your hands until a dough forms; do not knead. Divide in two, wrap tightly and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion until soft and translucent.
- Add the minced beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as you go. Drain excess grease if needed.
- Stir in the diced carrot, potatoes, salt, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and crumbled seasoning cube until combined.
- Pour in the water, reserving ¼ cup. Cover and simmer on low for 10-12 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally.
- Mix the cornstarch with the reserved ¼ cup water, stir into the filling and cook 1-2 minutes until thickened. Transfer to a wide plate and let cool completely.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll each dough piece on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick, then cut out circles.
- Brush the edges with egg wash, place 1-2 tablespoons of cooled filling in the centre of each circle, fold into a semi-circle and crimp the edges with a fork.
- Place on a baking tray, brush the tops with egg wash and poke small holes with a fork.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.
