How To Make Rie's Edible Holiday Gifts • Tasty
Ingredients
- Butter · softened12 tbsp
- Cream cheese · softened3 tbsp
- Sugar1 ½ cups
- Egg3
- Vanilla2 tsp
- Salt1 tsp
- Flour3 ½ cups
- Baking powder½ tsp
- Cream2 tsp
- Royal icing · for decorating
Instructions
- Cream the butter, cream cheese and sugar with an electric mixer on high for about 5 minutes, until fluffy and the sugar is mostly dissolved. Scrape down the bowl as needed.
- Beat in the eggs, egg yolk and vanilla, scraping the bowl well.
- Add the salt, then fold in the sifted flour, baking powder and cream of tartar with a spatula.
- Divide the dough into 2 portions, wrap tightly and chill at least 2 hours (up to 3 to 4 days).
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and line 2 baking sheets with parchment.
- Let the dough soften slightly at room temperature. On a lightly floured surface, roll each piece to a 10-inch (25 cm) round about 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) thick, then trim to an 8 x 10-inch (20 x 25 cm) rectangle. Move the squares to the sheets.
- Dip a cookie cutter in flour and press it into the dough, one square at a time. Repeat with the other 4 shapes, spacing them evenly. Remove the cutters, then use a paring knife to cut the puzzle-like pattern outside each shape from each corner.
- Use an icing tip to cut an ornament hole from the top of each shape and from all the puzzle pieces. Separate all the shapes, spacing them evenly, and chill at least 30 minutes.
- Bake 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges just start to turn golden. Cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
- Decorate and let the icing set fully. Thread twine through each ornament hole and tie to secure.
