How to make the SIMPLEST ITALIAN PASTA SAUCE at home

By Ethan Chlebowski · 30 min

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Blend the whole peeled tomatoes until smooth, using a food mill, food processor or blender. (For a chunkier sauce, skip this and let them break down as they cook.)
  2. Peel the onion, cut it in half and leave the root end on so the halves hold together.
  3. Add the tomatoes, butter, onion halves and a small pinch of salt to a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  4. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes, until reduced and thickened.
  5. Turn off the heat and remove the onion halves.
  6. Taste and add salt as needed. Use right away, or refrigerate for about a week.
