Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Rinse the moong dal under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. Soak it in 1 cup of water for 3 to 4 hours, then drain completely and discard the soaking water.
  2. Preheat the air fryer to 360°F.
  3. Put the drained dal, ginger, green chilies and cumin seeds into a small high-speed blender jar. Pulse to a thick, coarse, grainy batter. Add 1 tablespoon water only if needed to get it moving, and do not over-blend.
  4. Transfer the batter to a bowl and add the salt, turmeric, red onion and cilantro. Mix well.
  5. Line the air fryer tray with parchment or spray it with cooking spray. Shape the batter into small bite-sized balls, place them slightly apart in the basket, and lightly spray their tops with oil.
  6. Air fry at 360°F for 8 minutes. Shake the basket, spray lightly with oil again, and if making fried chilies, slit each chili lengthways, add a pinch of salt inside and place on top of the pakoras.
  7. Cook for another 4 to 7 minutes until golden brown and crispy, checking at 4 minutes as air fryers vary.
