My new favorite way to serve tempeh
Ingredients
- Tempeh1
- Grapeseed oil2 tbsp
- Bbq sauce⅓
- Ketchup1 cup
- Maple syrup4 tbsp
- Apple cider vinegar3 tbsp
- Soy sauce2 tbsp
- Molasses2 tbsp
- Worcestershire sauce1 tbsp
- Liquid smoke1 tbsp
- Smoked paprika1 ½ tsp
- Chili powder1 ½ tsp
- Black pepper¾ tsp
- Onion powder¼ tsp
- Garlic powder¼ tsp
- Cayenne pepper0.13 tsp
- Arrowroot · powder1 ½ tbsp
Instructions
- Cut the tempeh crosswise into ½-inch strips, then slice each strip in half lengthwise to make thinner pieces.
- Optional: steam the tempeh in a steamer basket over a few inches of boiling water, covered, for 10 minutes.
- Line a cutting board or plate with paper towels.
- Heat a 12-inch nonstick frying pan over medium heat with 1 ½ tablespoons of the oil. When the oil shimmers (a few minutes), lay the tempeh slices in a single layer and cook 3 ½ to 4 ½ minutes, until golden brown on the bottom.
- Brush the top of each piece with the remaining oil (or spray with cooking spray), flip, and cook 2 ½ to 4 more minutes, until seared on the other side. Move to the paper towels.
- Turn off the heat and let the pan cool for a few minutes.
- Return the pan to medium-low heat and add the BBQ sauce. Simmer 1 to 2 minutes, stirring with a silicone spatula, until gently simmering; lower the heat if it bubbles rapidly.
- Add the tempeh back to the pan and coat it in the sauce for a minute or two, until very saucy.
