Nikumaki Onigiri (Meat-Wrapped Rice Balls)
Ingredients
- Rice2 cups
- Salt2 pinches
- Beef4–5
- Soy sauce1 ½ tbsp
- Sake1 tbsp
- Mirin1 tbsp
- Sugar1 tsp
- Oil1 tsp
- Sesame seed
- Lettuce
Instructions
- Mix the steamed rice with a couple of pinches of salt.
- Shape about 1/2 cup of rice (a little less for smaller onigiri) into a tight cylinder about 3 inches long. Repeat to make 4 to 5 rice balls.
- Wrap each rice ball in one paper-thin slice of beef so no rice shows.
- Mix the soy sauce, sake, mirin, sugar and water in a small bowl.
- Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat and cook the wrapped rice balls until the beef is browned all over. Add the sauce, coat the beef, and cook until almost all the liquid has evaporated.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with lettuce leaves if you like.
