Ingredients

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar, milk, yeast, milk powder and egg.
  2. Add the flour and salt and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Add the softened butter and mix until fully absorbed.
  4. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, then shape into a ball and coat with oil.
  5. Cover and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough to release the air. Roll and flatten it into a 16 x 9 inch rectangle.
  7. Make vertical cuts halfway through the dough, leaving the far end uncut.
  8. Spread the raisins and walnuts over the dough, roll it up tightly and pinch the ends to seal.
  9. Place in a 9 x 4 x 4 inch loaf pan lined with parchment and brushed with butter. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes, or until doubled.
  10. Brush with an egg wash made from 1 egg and 2 tablespoons milk.
  11. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 25-30 minutes.
  12. Brush the top with melted salted butter while still warm for a soft crust.
