Roti Canai
Ingredients
- Flour300 g
- Salt½ tsp
- Sugar½ tsp
- Vegan butter2 tbsp
- Oil for cooking or brushing
Instructions
- Mix the flour, salt and sugar in a large bowl.
- Rub in the melted vegan butter until the mixture is coarse and sandy. Test by forming a loose ball from a tablespoon of flour; if it won't hold, add a little more melted butter.
- Add the water and knead into a mass, then continue kneading on a clean surface for about 10 to 15 minutes until smooth. The dough will be sticky.
- Divide the dough into 5 portions and shape each into a ball.
- Grease a pan, rub each ball with oil, place them on the pan, cover and rest for 1 hour. (Alternatively, refrigerate until ready to use.)
- Oil the work surface and rolling pin generously. Roll one dough ball into a thin layer. For flipping, press it into a thin circle and flip it.
- Lift one side of the dough and fan-fold it to the end, then coil it into a spiral, aiming for large bubbles.
- Heat a non-stick pan with oil. Flatten a dough piece with your palm on an oiled surface into a thin disc.
- Fry the roti in the greased, preheated non-stick pan until golden brown on both sides.
- Remove, clap the roti between your palms, and serve warm.
