Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Drain the tofu and press out excess moisture for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Cut the tofu into cubes or tear into bite-sized pieces and put them in a bowl.
  3. Drizzle on 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, then add 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder and black pepper to taste. Toss gently to coat.
  4. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons cornstarch (or potato starch) over the tofu and toss or shake gently to coat.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  6. Spread the tofu in one layer on a baking sheet, with pieces not touching.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes, toss the pieces, then bake 15 to 20 more minutes, adding 1 to 2 minutes at a time until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Air fryer option: place the tofu in one layer in the basket, leaving a little space between pieces. Air fry at 400°F for 18 to 20 minutes, shaking the basket at about 8 minutes and again 5 minutes later, until golden brown and crispy. Add 1 to 2 minutes at a time if needed.
  9. Whisk together 3 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil and 2 teaspoons cornstarch in a small bowl.
  10. Add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon minced garlic and the white parts of the green onion to a skillet, then turn on medium heat. Cook 2 to 3 minutes until the onion whites are translucent and the mixture smells strong.
  11. Whisk the sauce again, pour it into the skillet and stir constantly for 1 to 2 minutes until it simmers and thickens.
  12. Add the crispy tofu, the green onion tops and 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds, toss to coat and serve right away.
