Soutzoukakia (Greek Meatballs) Juicy Greek Meatballs in Rich Tomato Sauce!
Ingredients
- Bread3 slices
- Ground beef1 lb
- Garlic4 cloves
- Onion1
- Egg1
- Cumin1 tsp
- Salt2 tsp
- Black pepper1 tsp
- Flour3 tbsp
- Olive oil4 tbsp
- Diced tomatoes1 can
- Tomato paste2 tbsp
- Cinnamon¼ tsp
Instructions
- Put the bread in a large bowl, add the water and let it soak for a few minutes. Squeeze out and discard any excess water.
- Add the ground beef, onion, egg, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper to the bread. Mix until well combined.
- Wet your hands and shape the mixture into football-shaped meatballs, making 8 to 12. Roll them in the flour and set aside.
- Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Sear the meatballs for about 5 minutes until golden on all sides. They do not need to be cooked through.
- In the same pan over medium heat, heat the olive oil until shimmering but not smoking. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, pepper, cinnamon and water. Bring to a simmer, cover and cook for 20 to 30 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Add the seared meatballs to the sauce and simmer on medium-low for about 30 minutes.
- To finish in the oven, place the meatballs in an oven-safe dish, pour the sauce over them and bake at 400°F for 30 minutes. Check after 20 minutes and, if the sauce has thickened or dried too much, add 1/2 cup water.
- Serve with white rice.
