Ingredients

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.
  2. In a larger bowl, beat the butter and sugar until combined. Mix in the vanilla, then add all 4 eggs one at a time and mix, scraping down the sides.
  3. Fold the dry ingredients, buttermilk and hot coffee into the butter mixture with a wooden spoon until well combined.
  4. Divide the batter between two 6-inch or one 8-inch lined, greased cake tin and bake at 160°C / 320°F for 40–50 minutes, until the cake springs back when pressed.
  5. Mix the black gel colouring and the 40g cocoa powder into the buttercream until combined. Level and cut each cake in half to make 4 layers, spread ⅓ cup of buttercream between the layers, and cover the outside with the remaining buttercream. Chill for 2 hours to set.
  6. Microwave the marshmallows in 30-second intervals until fully melted. With clean, dry hands, stretch the marshmallow and drape it over the cake. Press the spiders around the cake.
  7. Let the marshmallow set for one hour before serving.
