The Apple Crumble I'd Choose Over Apple Crisp
Ingredients
- Apple2 ½ lb
- Sugar⅓ cups + 2 tbsp
- Lemon1 tbsp
- Flour1 tbsp + 1 ¼ cups
- Cinnamon · ground1 tsp
- Salt¾ tsp
- Butter½ cups
- Vanilla½ tsp
- Brown sugar½ cups
- Baking soda¼ tsp
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 2.5-quart glass or ceramic baking dish with butter.
- In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon and salt until evenly coated. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk the melted butter and vanilla together and let cool slightly.
- In another large bowl, stir together the flour, both sugars, baking soda, cinnamon and salt.
- Pour the slightly cooled butter mixture into the dry mixture and stir with a fork until clumpy. Don't overmix; it should be crumbly, not pasty.
- Stir the apples again, then spread them evenly in the dish. Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 40 to 45 minutes, until the topping is lightly golden and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. If the topping browns too much before the apples are done, cover with foil and keep baking.
- Let the crumble cool for 15 to 20 minutes so the filling thickens, then serve warm.
