Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a pan and sauté the onions until translucent. Add the rice and cook for a few minutes.
  2. Add the tomato paste, cinnamon, dried mint, sugar, pine nuts, parsley and salt, then pour in 1/2 cup boiling water. Stir well, cook for about 5 minutes, then turn off the heat.
  3. Put 5 or 6 grape leaves aside to cover the bottom of the pot.
  4. Lay a grape leaf flat and place about 1 tablespoon of filling on it. Fold in the left and right sides, then the bottom, and roll tightly into a cigar.
  5. Cover the bottom of a large pot with the reserved grape leaves. Arrange the stuffed leaves in the pot, packed tightly side by side and layered so they stay closed.
  6. Pour 1/2 cup vegetable oil over the rolls, then shake the pot gently so the oil reaches the bottom.
  7. Slowly pour boiling water over the rolls until it barely covers them.
  8. Place an upside-down plate on top of the rolls and cover the pot with a lid. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce to low and cook covered for about 45 minutes.
  9. Take one roll out, let it cool for a minute and bite it. It is ready when the rice is cooked and soft.
