Instructions

  1. Warm the milk to about 110–115°F (gently in a pan or about 1 minute in the microwave). Pour it into a large bowl, add the yeast and 1 tablespoon of the sugar, stir, and rest for 5 minutes until creamy and foamy.
  2. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar, the melted butter, egg, salt and flour. Mix into a dough, then knead for about 2 minutes on medium speed (or with a bread machine on its dough setting), until smooth and elastic. Knead in 1 tablespoon of softened butter until absorbed. The dough can be slightly sticky.
  3. Butter a large bowl, add the dough and turn it to coat. Leave in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  4. Butter a 9 by 13 inch baking dish.
  5. Punch down the risen dough and shape it on a floured surface into a rectangle, then roll it to about 10 by 18 inches.
  6. Spread 2 tablespoons softened butter over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Sprinkle with the brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll into a log, trim the ends, and cut into 12 equal portions.
  7. Place the 12 portions in the buttered dish, cover with a cloth and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, until nearly doubled.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  9. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until golden brown and firm to the touch.
  10. Whip the cream cheese, 8 tablespoons room-temperature butter, powdered sugar and vanilla with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy.
  11. Spread the frosting over the rolls as soon as they leave the oven.
