The Flakiest Buttermilk Biscuits You’ll Ever Make!
Ingredients
- Flour2 cups
- Baking powder½ tsp
- Baking soda¼ tsp
- Sugar½ tbsp
- Salt½ tsp
- Butter5 tbsp
- Vanilla1 tsp
- Buttermilk¾ cups + 1 tbsp
Instructions
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment or a silicone mat.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and baking soda.
- Grate the frozen butter into the bowl and toss it in the flour to coat.
- Gently stir in 3/4 cup buttermilk and the vanilla until a shaggy dough forms.
- Pat the dough into a rectangle about 10 x 8 inches and 1/4 inch thick, long edge facing you. Fold it into thirds like a letter, turn it 90 degrees, and roll it out again to 10 x 8 inches, 1/4 inch thick.
- Repeat the folding, turning and rolling two more times. On the final roll, shape the dough into a 10 x 5-inch rectangle about 3/4 inch thick.
- Cut out 8 to 12 biscuits with a floured 1-inch round cutter, re-rolling scraps as needed.
- Place the biscuits on the baking sheet and brush the tops with the remaining 1 tablespoon buttermilk.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden brown on top.
