- Black pepper
- Olive oil · for frying
- Extra virgin olive oil¼ cups

- Chili flake · crushed flakes½ tsp
- Oregano½ tsp
- Basil3 sprigs
- Passata1 can
- Heavy cream½ cups
- 24-inch sub roll1
- Butter
- Milk
- Pickled peppers · chopped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Over medium-low heat, warm the olive oil in a medium saucepan. Add the garlic and onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the Calabrian chilies, red pepper flakes, oregano and basil and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Add the passata, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 30 minutes until the flavors meld and it has slightly reduced. Take off the heat and stir in the cream.
- Set up three wide, shallow bowls: eggs; flour; breadcrumbs seasoned with garlic powder, salt and pepper.
- Flatten each shrimp into a thin patty with a mallet, rolling pin or heavy pot. Toss in flour, dip in egg, drain off excess, then press into breadcrumbs on both sides. Place on a sheet tray.
- Heat 1 inch of olive oil in a deep, wide pan over medium heat to 350°F. Fry 4-6 breaded shrimp at a time for about 1 minute, flipping halfway if needed. Drain on a rack-lined sheet tray and repeat until all are cooked through.
- Slice the bread in half horizontally, leaving it 90% cut through. Butter both sides and the top, wrap in foil and bake for about 5 minutes until the butter melts and the bread is warm.
- Layer the bread with shrimp, sauce, mozzarella, peppers and more sauce. Cover with foil and return to the oven until the cheese melts.
- Slice into 1-inch pieces and serve.
