The Ultimate Cheesy FRIED MOZZARELLA SANDWICH Like an Italian (Mozzarella in Carrozza)
Ingredients
- Mozzarella cheese
- Egg3
- Flour2 cups
- Sourdough bread6 slices
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Sunflower oil
Instructions
- Slice the fresh mozzarella about 1 cm thick.
- Beat the eggs in a bowl with a pinch of salt and plenty of pepper.
- Spread the flour on a wide plate. Press each bread slice into it on both sides, then shake off the excess and place on a lined plate.
- Dip one side of each floured slice into the egg, then set it egg side up.
- Dip the mozzarella slices in egg on both sides and place half slices on one bread slice so the bread is covered. Top with the second slice and press firmly, making sure the edges are sealed.
- Dip the whole sandwich in the egg, covering every side including the crust, so the cheese is sealed in. Repeat for all sandwiches.
- Chill the sandwiches on a lined plate in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Heat plenty of sunflower oil in a frying pan to 179°C (399°F).
- Fry one sandwich at a time until golden and crisp. Spoon oil over the top while it cooks, then flip and fry until golden and crisp on the other side.
- Drain each sandwich on paper towels and blot any extra oil from the top.
