This Might Be The Most Underrated Sandwich In America
Ingredients
- Vegetable oil2 tbsp
- Onion · peeled diced1
- Beef · ground2 lb
- Adobo seasoning4 tsp
- Sazón seasoning2 tsp
- American cheese4–5
- Soft hero4
- Mayonnaise8 tbsp
- Ketchup4 tbsp
- Tomato16 slices
- Iceberg lettuce · shredded2 cups
- Salt
- Black pepper
Instructions
- Heat the oil on a griddle or large cast iron skillet over medium heat, about 350°F (175°C).
- Add the diced onion, season lightly with salt, and cook, stirring now and then, for about 20 minutes until deeply browned. Set aside.
- Spread the ground beef into small mounds on a parchment-lined sheet tray or platter.
- On the griddle, spread half the beef out and press it flat with two spatulas.
- Immediately season the beef evenly with the adobo and sazón. Substitute: 2 teaspoons salt and ½ teaspoon ground pepper.
- Let the beef stand 2 to 3 minutes, then chop it into smaller pieces.
- Mix in half the caramelized onions, then lay half the American cheese over the beef.
- When the cheese starts to melt, chop it in until fully combined. Move the cheesy beef to a plate and repeat with the other half of the beef (both halves can be cooked at once on a very large griddle).
- Brush 2 teaspoons of mayonnaise on each cut side of the buns. Place them cut-side down on the griddle and toast 2 to 3 minutes until golden.
- Remove the buns and spread the remaining mayonnaise and ketchup on them.
- Spoon the cheesy beef onto the bottom bun, then layer with tomato slices and shredded lettuce.
- Fold the bun closed, wrap in foil, rest 1 to 2 minutes, then slice.
