Vetkoek Boerie Burger
Ingredients
- Vegetable oil1 tbsp
- Onion · finely chopped1
- Garlic · finely chopped2
- Chopped tomatoes1 can
- Salt
- Black pepper
- PnP Country Classic Thin Boerewors2 packets
- Let’s Cook Vetkoek dough · fried or store-bought fried PnP Vetkoek500 g
- Cheese4 slices
Instructions
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic and sauté for 5–6 minutes until soft and translucent.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, season with salt and pepper, and cook for a further 5 minutes, stirring now and then, until it becomes a jammy sauce. Spoon into a bowl and set aside.
- Uncoil each portion of wors gently, then reshape it into a tight, flat spiral about the width of the vetkoek. Push 2–3 toothpicks through the coil at different points to pin it flat.
- Heat 1 tsp oil in the pan over medium heat. Lay the coils flat and fry for 6–7 minutes on the first side without moving them, until deeply golden. Flip carefully with two spatulas or tongs and fry for another 6–7 minutes until cooked through.
- In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each coil, lower the heat to low and cover for 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts.
- Cut the vetkoek like a burger roll. If it has cooled, warm it cut-side down in the same pan for 30–60 seconds.
- Remove the toothpicks. Spread a little sauce or chutney on the base of the vetkoek, add the cheesy wors coil and a generous spoonful of smoor, then close with the top half.
