You've never had tofu seasoned like this
Ingredients
- Tofu1
- Smoked paprika1 ½ tsp
- Garlic powder1 tsp
- Onion powder½ tsp
- Oregano · dried½ tsp
- Thyme · dried¼ tsp
- Cayenne pepper¼ tsp
- Black pepper½ tsp
- Salt¼ tsp
- Nutritional yeast2 tbsp
- Soy sauce1 tbsp
- Vegetable oil2 tbsp
Instructions
- Pat the tofu very dry with paper towels or a clean towel. Cut it into 1/2-inch steaks, tear it into bite-sized pieces, or cube it.
- Brush steaks on both sides with 1 tablespoon soy sauce. For smaller pieces, toss them with the soy sauce in a bowl.
- Mix the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, dried thyme, cayenne, black pepper, fine salt and nutritional yeast in a wide, shallow dish. Press or dip each piece until coated on all sides. Set aside.
- Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons neutral oil in a cast iron pan over medium heat until it shimmers and a piece of tofu sizzles on contact, without smoking.
- Add the tofu in one layer, in batches if needed. Steaks: sear undisturbed 3 to 4 minutes per side, flipping once, until deeply charred and crusty. Smaller pieces: toss occasionally until all sides are well seared.
- Rest the tofu for a minute or two, then serve over rice or grains, with a squeeze of lime and sliced green onion if you like.
